How It all Started
Mariachi Oro de Coronado had its humble beginnings in the crisp autumn of 2021. With the gracious support of the EPISD Fine Arts Department and under the guiding hand of Mrs. Leslee Way, this musical journey came to life. And, oh, what a journey it has been.
As the sunset, casting a golden hue on our southwest landscape, this young group set sail on their musical expedition. They harmonized, strummed, and performed relentlessly, reshaping an after-school club into a dynamic, harmonious ensemble. The high-impact tutors, like guardian angels, lent their expertise to nurture these sprouting talents.
The first taste of victory was experienced as Mariachi Oro de Coronado ventured into the local UIL Mariachi Contest. Their melodies echoed through the air, earning them a resonant “Sweepstakes Rating” and an invitation to the coveted UIL Mariachi State Festival in Seguin, TX. Dreams were being woven into reality, one chord at a time.
As time advanced, so did Mariachi Oro de Coronado. What was once an after-school club developed into a class, resonating its charm throughout El Paso, drawing attention to mariachi lovers from all districts. The original members may have walked across graduation stages, but the group’s unwavering dedication and determination remained as constant as the Rio Grande’s flow.
But the journey is far from over. Mariachi Oro de Coronado now sets its sights on the grand stage of state UIL, determined to secure that coveted sweepstakes rating. Still, even the most impressive symphony demands suitable instruments. As they strive for excellence, they eagerly seek the indispensable tools to elevate their program to new heights.

Our Mariachi group is composed of passionate and talented high school students who share a deep love for preserving the soulful sounds of folkloric Mexican music and spreading its joy throughout our community. We firmly believe that music serves as a bridge, uniting people across diverse cultures, and we take immense pride in representing our rich heritage through our heartfelt performances.
Meet Our Ensemble
Mariachi Oro boasts a diverse ensemble, comprising students spanning the spectrum of high school life, from spirited freshmen to seasoned seniors. This beautiful amalgamation not only enriches our musical repertoire but also fosters a sense of mentorship and camaraderie within our close-knit family.
Our ensemble is a symphony of various instruments, each contributing its unique voice to the melodious mariachi tunes that resonate within our hearts. Within our ensemble, you’ll find the enchanting harmonies of violins, the resounding bray of trumpets, the soulful strumming of guitars, the deep resonance of guitarrónes, the delicate notes of the harp, and the lively vihuelas. It is through these instruments that we paint the canvas of our mariachi songs, creating a vivid tapestry of emotions for our audiences to experience.
Yet, what truly sets our High School Mariachi apart is the individuality and distinctive qualities that each member brings to our musical family. Beyond their instrumental prowess, our members infuse their own personalities, diverse musical backgrounds, and life experiences into our performances. Our Mariachi proudly showcases a broad repertoire of traditional mariachi tunes, ranging from cherished classics like “El Son de la Negra” and “Cielito Lindo” to more contemporary pieces like “La Bikina.” We take immense pride in delving into the history and cultural significance of each composition we play, and we strive to share that profound knowledge with our audiences.
